It was like a war zone. People milled through the debris of a place they’d enjoyed their whole lives, and now it was gone. For exercise bikes that nobody ever used. The developer put up a multistory apartment building, and the ground floor — where that building could have gone on being a restaurant, a room people used — became a gym, with stationary bikes facing Roosevelt. Satire writing itself. That frontage space they built instead, it was more than an insult. It was an attack on the heart of our city.
